My middle nephew gave me a log he innoculated with Chicken-of-the-Woods spores when I saw him at Xmas in ’23. It has been sitting in the mulch since we got it home. I have thrown a little water on it when there were long periods of no-rain. But, other than that, just waiting.

Turkey tails – mostly a cold weather mushroom. Edible, but not in a culinary way. Many medicinal properties, especially for women’s health. (Chicken of the woods is yellow, blobby-looking, and poisonous. You don’t want that stuff.) I’ve been learning a lot about mushrooms lately, and wrote an article showing the development of turkey tails. They’re fascinating. šŸ˜‰

My nephew, who gave me the log, got the spore from a commercial vendor in Asheville. If they don’t grow into CotW, he will be having a word with them.

CotW is not poisonous and IS a culinary mushroom. You may be thinking of a lookalike that someone misnamed for you.
