Suzanne Vega at the Haw River Ballroom

This sold out performance last night was delightful. To my ear, her voice has not changed since I first listened to her Solitude Standing album in 1987. She did some old stuff early “to get it out of the way” and some new stuff, including one she is still working on as an encore. She was accompanied by Gerry Leonard “from Dublin.” I’d be interested to hear what the 2 of them thought of Saxapahaw (which she chose not to try to pronounce. 😆)

I have become a little nervous when performers are listed as singers and storytellers. That has sometimes meant they ramble more than they sing. I did not find that to be true of Vega. Her commentary about the songs that she was singing was concise and entertaining.

We are probably not going to any more performances at the Haw River Ballroom though. They use metal fold out chairs, which tired my butt after a while. And the lights shone into the eyes of the audience were annoying and sometimes painful. They depend on the Hawbridge School for parking. But, lighting to get there is poor. I had to use the flashlight on my phone to see the sidewalk at the street crossing. One street light at that spot would make a huge difference to the safety of event goers.

That’s awesome you got to see Vega!  Bummer that the venue sucked.

It wasn’t so bad that I was sorry we went. And I did love seeing the show. But, it will take someone else who is a Very Big Deal to me to get me back there.
