• Chihuly chandelier

I didn’t look up as I walked in and did not see this until I came out of the French Moderns exhibition.

It’s over the ticket desk. The special exhibition section is behind that and I was focused on getting paid ($15, not expensive) and getting in.

The permanent collection is mostly upstairs.

  • Untangling from Amazon

    activism, books, PSA

I was an Audible subscriber before Amazon bought them. I did not like that it made me an instant user of Amazon, but I like audiobooks a lot and I stayed.

I like ebooks a lot, too. I like backlighting and I like being able to highlight a word or phrase I’m not sure about and getting instant answers.

But, I really hate Bezos and his monopoly. So, I’m changing my ways.

Libro.fm is a way to buy audiobooks that pays a local bookstore. I was getting 2 credits a month from Audible for $24.67/month and 2 credits on Libro is $25.61/month. I can afford the extra dollar and I feel better about my purchase.

Bookshop.org is a way to buy ebooks that, also, supports a local bookstore. If you pick a store, they get 30% of the retail sale. If you don’t, that goes into a pot for all the booksellers they work with. They also do mail order of physical books.

Both have apps. I have chosen different bookstores because I like shopping at both of them and that feels fair.

  • Daffodil season

    deer proof, home, plants

    It’s that time!!

When I bought this house, I got a mixed bag of daffodil bulbs. I wanted multiple clumps of single varieties. So, I put one of each in various places under the trees in the far back of our yard. Daffodils don’t spread as quickly as I thought they would. Also, there were fewer varieties in the bag than were on the label. But, they are still sunny yellow as Spring starts inching in.

  • Marc Chagall – The Musician

    a day in this life

    This is very small.

So, I found the huge frame puzzling. (I’ve been noticing frames more in the last couple of years after a conversation with a friend about them.)

Makes me think of Tevye from Fiddler on the Roof. I don’t think that’s coincidental.

My cousin is a big fan so I texted the picture to him while I was there.

  • Claude Monet – Rising Tide at Pourville

Another fairly small piece in the French Moderns exhibition. I don’t remember ever seeing this before and I’ve seen a decent amount of Monet’s work in books that I have never seen in person. I love the feeling of impending rain from the sky and waves. I can almost feel a cold wind.
