    a day in this life

All time is Now.    How can you lose what you still have even if it isn’t part of the immediate conciousness of the meat “you” are wearing?

Everything IS.  Therefore, all good things are Us; all bad things are Us.  There is nothing to envy or want.  Just because it isn’t part of the consciousness that is the locus that “you” consider your “self” doesn’t change that some part of “us” is enjoying/enduring whatever is wanted/feared/loved.

(Recognizing that this is said from a Locus of Comfort and that a Locus of Pain would likely want to smack me.  At the very least.)

    a day in this life

“When William Penn was convinced of the principles of Friends, and became a frequent attendant at their meetings, he did not immediately relinquish his gay apparel; it is even said that he wore a sword, as was then customary among men of rank and fashion . Being one day in company with George Fox, he asked his advice concerning it, saying that he might, perhaps, appear singular among Friends, but his sword had once been the means of saving his life without injuring his antagonist, and moreover, that Christ has said, “he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one.” George Fox answered, “I advise thee to wear it as long as thou canst.” Not long after this they met again, when William had no sword, and George said to him, “William, where is t hy sword?” “Oh!” said he, I have taken thy advice; I wore it as long as I could.”

This link says this is a Quaker fable.  That piece of information doesn’t make the story any less useful.

Do whatever it is that is fretting you for “as long as thou canst.” and when that becomes intolerable, do something else.

    In The Desert
    ~Stephen Crane

    In the desert
I saw a creature, naked, bestial,
    Who, squatting upon the ground,
Held his heart in his hands,
    And ate of it.
I said: “Is it good, friend?”
    “It is bitter—bitter,” he answered;
    “But I like it
    Because it is bitter,
And because it is my heart.”

    family, food & drink

Christopher brought breakfast into my bedroom, yesterday morning, serving me scrambled eggs, blueberry yogurt and perfect coffee.

I messed around the house for a while, fretting over packing for an over-night in Winston-Salem.  Once here, I continued the festivities with a massage from Nikki at 6th Sense Health and Wellness Center followed by a nap.  Cocktail hour was a glass of Artesa 2007 Chardonnay

Bernardin’s has obnoxious music on the site that I can’t short circuit.  The restaurant is located in the historic Zevely House on Fourth Street in Winston-Salem.  The photos on the site are from the old location. The Zevely House is a beautiful old house with lovely gardens that make outside dining in cooler weather look very enjoyable.  It was warm enough last night that we opted to eat inside.  This allowed us to see paintings by Alix Hitchcock.

Our choices were lobster gazpacho, a column of heirloom tomatoes perched on a ring off eggplant with mozzarella, pine nuts and a very nice balsamic vinaigrette, curried grouper with eggplant served on jasmine rice with a drizzle of mint aoili, sautéed scallops with a chipotle aoili, peach and raspberry cobbler with praline ice cream and chocolate cups with white chocolate mousse and strawberry sauce drizzled all over the plate.  They drizzle a lot at Bernardin’s.  Wines were Dyed in the Wool Sauvignon Blanc (Marlborough, NZ, very grapefruity nose, typical grassiness but mildly flavored) and Waterbrook chardonnay.

After dinner, we strolled around town, had coffees at Krankies and stopped in a bar on Trade Street neara/perture and had a little whiskey. MacAllan 12 year old scotch for him; Basil Hayden’s small batch Kentucky bourbon for me.

Amazingly, neither of us got tipsy.

    Happy birthday to me 😀
