Cedar and a grove

I’ve decided I want a grove. Well. I always knew I love them. I’ve simply decided that I might not kill them since the juniper is doing well.

I got a 10″ pot, thinking I would put the grove in it.

But, I believe I need to grow those trees a little. We get a ridiculous number of maple sprouts every Spring. And, if I will go ahead and start the cedar in the new pot, I can collect maples in that large pot to get them ready for the grove.

The maple I’ve been cultivating has gotten to be a nice size for a good primary tree.

Bonsai is slow and so am I

I finally got a new pot for my juniper. My mother took me to B. B. Barnes Garden Center in Asheville and they had a nice selection of inexpensive bonsai pots. This one is slightly larger than the one this tree was already in.

I put the tree in a bucket of water while I got planting medium from the shed. (I was a amused to find a hazelnut buried in the third scoop.) By the time I was ready for the tree, all the “soil” had fallen out and it was free to settle in.

I haven’t done anything with the cedar, yet. I’m starting to see a shape, though. So, it’s probably time to start looking for another pot. The maple is going to be a while taking shape.

Mame care

One of the r/Bonsai guys posted a picture of a mame that inspired a lot of conversation. I am copying some of his information here so that I can find it when I want it.
- I started by growing a field maple in open ground for 3-4 years.
- Chopped it down as low as you see here.
- It then burst out with buds (branches)
- I put it into a bonsai pot and it now essentially stays this big.
It’s important to pick a species which back buds and has small leaves.

Someone asked about watering something so small and his response was:

Humidity tray – semi-submerged or fully sometimes.

I don’t know that I’ll ever try a mame but that humidity tray looks like a great idea, especially when we go out of town for a couple of days.

Springtime itches

I’ve been shopping for bonsai supplies online. There is no good place to buy bonsai pots near me. Southern States pots look cheap and nowhere else nearby carries them. It’s time to work on the roots of my juniper and I would like to start work on the cedar I’ve been keeping on the deck . So, it needs a bonsai pot. I have an anticipatory maple in a non-bonsai pot, too. I haven’t decided how much to let it grow before I start its bonsai experience.

I finally ordered food for my little tree. I have been starving it because I simply hadn’t gotten around to getting food for it. I hope I haven’t killed it.

I have pellets coming from Bonsai Tonight. Shipping cost half the price of the pellets but I can live with that.
